Stop two. Sixteen Keys, One Missing.
Sixteen keys on a split steel ring. Count them if you like — the label will wait.
Two are brass and long, the kind that turn a mortice lock twice. Four are flat and stamped with numbers. One is so worn that whatever it once said has gone. Nine are ordinary.
What we want you to notice is the gap. The ring is worn thinnest at a point where no key hangs now, and the wear is deep — deeper than the others. Something heavy lived there for a long time, and then it left.
We have no idea what it opened. Neither does anyone else. A keyring is a map of every door a person was trusted with, and this one has a hole in it.
There is a temptation, in a gallery, to fill that hole with a story. We are going to leave it empty. The gap is the object.
