Stop three. The Mended Sock.
Grey wool. One sock, not a pair. Darned four times over the heel, and each darn is a slightly different grey.
Look at the order of them. The first repair is careful: small stitches, matched thread, a neat oval. The second is good. The third is quick. The fourth is barely a repair at all — long stitches, wrong colour, done in what looks like a hurry.
You can read a change of mind in that sequence. Somebody began by mending this sock properly and ended by mending it only enough.
This is the room where we keep repair, and repair is the most honest thing in the building. Nobody darns an object they have finished with. Every mend is a small argument that a thing is still worth having.
The fourth darn held, by the way. It is still holding.
