Stop five. The Loud Alarm Clock.
Twin bells on top, a cracked glass over the dial, and a winding key at the back worn flat on one side.
We are told, by people who have handled clocks like this, that the sound of it is not a ring but a hammering — a small violence, close to the head, in the dark.
The flat wear on the key tells you it was wound the same way every night by the same hand. The crack in the glass tells you it was knocked off something, at speed, at least once.
This is the last object in the guide and the only one that made a noise. Everything else here was quiet: a mug, a keyring, a sock, a ticket. This one interrupted people. It decided when a day began.
